Behind Bars

a story about Nate & Fede

Guard Nate had one rule: never feel anything. Prisoner Fede had one habit: breaking every rule he found.

Their first meeting ended with a slammed cell door and a muttered curse. Their second ended with Fede smirking through the bars, "You always look this miserable, officer?"

Nate hated him. The laugh. The stupid, reckless laugh.

But one night, Fede's cell was too quiet. Nate stopped. Without thinking, he spoke, just to hear the answer.

By morning, the hatred had grown soft at the edges, worn thin like old stone.

Fede touched the bars. Nate's hand rested, just barely, on the other side.

"Careful," Fede whispered. "You're breaking your own rules."

Nate didn't move away.
